Amabie is a mermaid with three legs who has its origin in the Japanese mythology.
It was May 3, 1846 and Japan was suffering from an epidemic. A bird-faced creature with long hair and three mermaid tails emerged from the sea and said to a man: “Draw my portrait and show it to everyone, only this way the epidemic will end”. His name was Amabie, a Yokai from the Japanese folklore. 174 years later, the legend still lives on.
